When I heard that another Transformers movie was in the making, I was the least excited. For anyone who had to go through the torture of watching The Last Knight can relate to me. To learn that the next movie will be a standalone prequel centred on Bumblebee… ouch! But gladly, the first trailer of the film titled Bumblebee has blown my mind away. The makers have somehow managed to not ruin the movie, at least the first trailer gives that impression.
Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe nominee Hailee Steinfeld joins the cast playing Charlie, the protagonist. John Cena is playing the military man Agent Burns, who seems like the antagonist – the trailer doesn’t make it very clear. Bumblebee shapeshifts into a VW Beetle, that is scared of humans here. He finds his first friend in Charlie, when she buys him from the junkyard.
Travis Knight has directed the movie, who has previously helmed Kubo and the Two Strings. The actor has successfully managed to bring raw emotions to the story. The VFX also seems to be an upgrade with transformation scenes not becoming a monumental mess of WTF-Is-Happening. The background score in the movie works exceptionally well in the favour of the trailer.
Bumblebee opens in theatres on 21 December. The official synopsis of the movie reads, “On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.”
