Starsport understands Tottenham centre-back Alderweireld is one of Jose Mourinho’s top targets in the summer transfer window.
The Belgium international is stalling on a contract extension and Spurs look set to sanction a sale.
Coral spokesman John Hill said: “Jose Mourinho will be desperate to strengthen up at the back this summer and Toby Alderweireld is likely to be seen as one of his main targets therefore he is odds-on to move to Manchester United.”
Starsport understands United are hoping to land Alderweireld for around ÂŁ55m.
But United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is aware negotiations with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy could prove tricky.
However, United believe the fee should not be that high because he will turn 30 next season and has just 12 months remaining on his current contract.
Alderweireld is demanding double the ÂŁ50,000-a-week he currently earns at Tottenham.
The 29-year-old’s personal terms should not prove to be a problem, and a United insider told The Sun: “The manager considers the player one of the best in the world in his position.
“The club know there could be a bargain to be had. He is an unbelievable talent for the money.
“His wages certainly aren’t a problem for United. They know they can pay what he wants if they have to.
“There is a feeling Alderweireld would still like to stay at Spurs if they decide to meet with his demands.”
Mourinho is eager to land a number of new faces including Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred and Porto right-back Diogo Dalot before the World Cup gets underway on June 14.
