The Red Devils failed to win a trophy this season, with Manchester United losing in the FA Cup final against Chelsea, while finishing second behind Manchester City in the Premier League.
Mourinho’s side ended up a staggering 19 points behind their arch-rivals, with City storming to the title.
And according to former United ace Sharpe, the Old Trafford board should consider sacking Mourinho, adding the Special One has lost his magic touch.
“I think they might need a new manager. It’s a tough one because they’ve got some unbelievable players,” Sharpe said to the Daily Star.
“Mourinho wouldn’t have been my first choice if I’m honest.
“When he came to Chelsea he was a breath of fresh air in his press conferences and was unpredictable.
“Now he just seems to be a bit unhappy, down and dour. That’s totally the opposite to when he first came over and his team performances reflect that.
“It’s a shame. If he just lightened up a bit and had a sense of humour then the team would reflect it.
“There’d be a lighter step in the dressing room and on the pitch.
“You’d see it in the performances. At the moment performances just seem to be slow.
“Rival teams are too knowledgeable and organised for you to play that way.
“You look at other successful teams this year – Tottenham, Manchester City and Liverpool – they all play disruptive quick football and teams can’t get a grip on them.”
Mourinho has won three major honours during his time at United, guiding the Red Devils to the EFL Cup, the Europa League and the FA Community Shield.
