That’s according to former Red Devil Lee Sharpe who reckons Jose Mourinho is the club’s big problem.

United finished second in the Premier League this season – albeit a whopping 19 points off winner Manchester City.

They also reached the FA Cup final but underwhelmed in the Wembley showpiece and lost 1-0 to Chelsea

A summer overhaul is expected as United look to close the gap on City.

Sharpe, however, is adamant that Mourinho is the real issue behind the scenes.

He exclusively told Starsport. “I think they might need a new manager. It’s a tough one because they’ve got some unbelievable players.

“Mourinho wouldn’t have been my first choice if I’m honest.

“I think they might need a new manager”

“When he came to Chelsea he was a breath of fresh air in his press conferences and was unpredictable.

“Now he just seems to be a bit unhappy, down and dour. That’s totally the opposite to when he first came over and his team performances reflect that.

“It’s a shame. If he just lightened up a bit and had a sense of humour then the team would reflect it.

“There’d be a lighter step in the dressing room and on the pitch.

“You’d see it in the performances. At the moment performances just seem to be slow.

“Rival teams are too knowledgeable and organised for you to play that way.

Lee Sharpe says Jose Mourinho won’t be respected by Man Utd’s stars

“You look at other successful teams this year – Tottenham, Manchester City and Liverpool – they all play disruptive quick football and teams can’t get a grip on them.”

Mourinho wasn’t afraid to criticise his players publicly during the last campaign.

England international Luke Shaw was singled out by the Portuguese on more than one occasion.

Sharpe says he sometimes clashed with Sir Alex Ferguson but had huge respect for the Scot.

The former midfielder isn’t convinced the current crop of United stars have the same reverence for Mourinho.

He added: “A few of us – myself included – didn’t always see eye to eye with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Luke Shaw has faced criticism from Jose Mourinho

“But one thing you did have was a respect for him. Whenever we did have an issue with each other it was always kept behind closed doors and in the dressing room.

“I think that unities the team, you respect the manger and you look out for each other when you know everything is kept in house.

“When things start getting out – and he starts digging player out – I think other players have doubts over the manager trust wise.

“It’s a funny one. He’s picked on Shaw a bit which is harsh because before he got injured he was one of best left-backs in the country.

“Now for some reason he thinks mentally the player isn’t right.

“Obviously i don’t see him training, but I think if Shaw played 10 or 12 games in a row you’d see him come back.

“Unfortunately Mourinho doesn’t see to want to do that for him.”

* Lee Sharpe was speaking at the McDonald’s & Manchester FA Community Football Day in Astley. These football days are taking place across the UK this summer, giving thousands of children the chance to enjoy the beautiful game.
