Stories about Justin Theroux “missing” Jennifer Aniston are made-up. This rumor, which is spreading to other outlets, was started by a site known for fabricating “exclusives.” Gossip Cop can explain what’s going on.
On Wednesday, InStyle published online its September cover story about Aniston. It marked her first interview since she and Theroux separated earlier this year. The article largely dominated the celebrity news cycle for the day. HollywoodLife, which likes to capitalize on hot topics, began doing so with this by peddling related stories. In these purported “exclusives,” the website claimed to know how Theroux, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were all supposedly reacting to Aniston’s interview.
In all three instances, Gossip Cop noted the signs that the stories were transparently manufactured. In Theroux’s case, it was alleged he was “blown away” by Aniston’s photo shoot for the magazine, with a so-called “source” claiming, “He kind of misses her and is suffering major FOMO.” Readers were then told, however, not to “assume” that Theroux “wants her back.” Rather, the untraceable snitch maintained he was just being supportive of his former love because “they’re still each other’s biggest cheerleaders.”
Gossip Cop pointed out that this premise didn’t make much sense considering Theroux hadn’t expressed support for anything else having to do with Aniston since their breakup nearly six months ago. It was clear that simply because there was a lot of attention being paid to the InStyle feature, the website just wanted to exploit fans’ interest by pretending to have related insight. That is even more evident now that the blog has cobbled together a second piece on how Theroux is supposedly feeling about Aniston in the wake of her magazine spread.
After previously claiming he “kind of misses her,” this follow-up article insists he “really misses her.” A similarly unnamed “source” is quoted as saying, “Justin has real fears that he will never be able to find another woman like Jennifer. The more time Justin spends away from Jen, meeting new people and being single, the more he realizes how incredible he had it with Jen.” After that, though, the outlet repeats its prior contentions about the exes not reconciling.
If they’re not reuniting, they’re “still really good friends but that’s it,” and “there’s no talk of getting back together,” as said in that first story, what exactly is the point of this second one? Why would a “source” close to Theroux tell a gossip publication that he worries Aniston is “irreplaceable” if he has no intention of rekindling a romance with her? Once again, the premise doesn’t make sense. It’s also hard to believe anyone in Theroux’s inner circle would be discussing this topic at all, irrespective of whether he is regretting the split or not.
And in the time since these alleged “exclusives” were published on Thursday and Friday, no trusted media source has corroborated any of the claims. Despite that, the Daily Mail is regurgitating HollywoodLife’s allegations without any evidence that they’re true or authentic. Making matters worse, the paper fills out the rest of its online article by bringing up untrue rumors about Aniston and Pitt reuniting, and repeating false claims about Theroux “leaning on” Olivia Munn.
Meanwhile, Gossip Cop checked in with Theroux’s camp, and though no one wanted to comment on the record, one confidante with whom we spoke dismissed the HollywoodLife claims as illegitimate. “It’s their created narrative,” said our contact. And that goes back to what Gossip Cop has said all along: HollywoodLife takes hot topics and popular celebrities, and concocts stories around them with seemingly fake “sources.” Aniston and Theroux are just the flavor of the week.
