George Clooney has not retired from acting, a full year after it was falsely claimed he was quitting the business to become a “full-time dad.” A little more than two weeks after Clooney and his wife Amal welcomed their twins, Alexander and Ella, a site notorious for making up phony stories maintained the actor-director was looking “forward to retirement” and being a stay-at-home father. Exactly 365 days ago, Gossip Cop debunked that report, and once again our fact-checking, sources, and even time itself has proven us correct.

On June 25, 2017, we busted HollywoodLife, which took the real-life events of the birth of Clooney’s kids and the sale of his tequila company, Casamigos, two weeks later to manufacture a wholly fabricated article about the actor transitioning into “full-time dad.” The outlet, often referred to as HollywoodLies, didn’t furnish any proof to back up its assertion, nor did it quote anyone on the record who said Clooney was quitting acting. Instead, it published its seemingly made-up premise based on a handful of quotes from an unnamed and unidentifiable “source.” How is one supposed to know whether the outlet’s “source” even exists?

At the time, Gossip Cop reported it was all untrue, and of course 12 months later, it’s clear Clooney has not retired from acting. He’s still starring, albeit in a smaller role, in the upcoming Hulu miniseries Catch-22. Clooney was supposed to play the lead, but had Kyle Chandler replace him, since he’s very busy also producing and directing the six-episode limited series.

That’s hardly quitting the business. In the past, Clooney’s rep even assured us on the record that he’s “not retiring.” It seems some of HollywoodLies’ story was based on quotes from an interview the actor gave a year before that were misconstrued.

In March 2016, the BBC ran with a headline about Clooney quitting acting; however, he never said he was done. What Clooney actually said is that there are fewer roles for mature actors and expressed that he didn’t think audiences wanted to watch stars grow older onscreen. “I think nobody really wants to see anybody really age… It’s a very unforgiving thing, the camera is, and so aging becomes something that you try to do less and less onscreen.” Not long after he made those remarks, Clooney starred in Money Monster with Jodie Foster.

Regardless, 12 months have passed since the HollywoodLies article and, Clooney has not retired from acting. Unfortunately, like a cold, the same false rumor comes back every season. Just a month ago, Gossip Cop busted the New Zealand tabloid Woman’s Weekly when it similarly wrongly reported Clooney was quitting acting.

Additionally, HollywoodLife doesn’t exactly have a stellar record when reporting about Clooney. Just a few months ago, the outlet published a wholly fabricated article about how Clooney was setting up late-night secret meetings between Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. The claim was nothing more than fan-fiction. In the real world, the ex-spouses are not involved again, and reps for all three stars assured Gossip Cop the narrative was a complete lie. Perhaps it’s time for HollywoodLies to start acting like a real celebrity news site and fact-checking its assertions.
