This is a pretty interesting anecdote from Mark Douglas of the Newcastle Chronicle.
Douglas recounts the Magpiesâ chase for Sandro Ramirez last summer, and reveals Rafa Benitez and Mike Ashley were actually close to landing the Spaniard until Evertonâs 11th-hour bid.
âWhen they met in those May days of possibility following Newcastle Unitedâs promotion to the Premier League, Rafa Benitez proposed a striker signing to Mike Ashley that whetted the ownerâs appetite,â Douglas writes.
âMalaga striker Ramirez was young, up-and-coming and coming off the back of a 14-goal La Liga season that seemed to hint at the early promise that had seen him break into Barcelonaâs first team.
âAt ÂŁ5mâ a price pretty much negotiated before his name was mentioned to Ashley â it felt like the perfect sort of Newcastle United deal.
ââGo and get himâ came the message from the Newcastle owner â only for Everton to blow Newcastle out of the water with a contract offer several times larger than the one Newcastle were proposing or thought was right for a player of his stature.â
Hindsight is a fine thing, I suppose – but was this the problem with Evertonâs shotgun transfer strategy last summer?
Letâs hope Marcel and Marco donât make the same mistakes….
