Liverpool suffered a 3-1 loss to Los Blancos in Kiev and two of those goals were the result of some woeful errors from goalkeeper Karius.
The Reds kept Real at bay for the first 45 minutes, but it wasn’t long after the break before Jurgen Klopp’s side slipped up.
After coming off his line to catch a long ball forward, Karius prematurely released the ball which was blocked by Karim Benzema.
The ball ended up flying into the back of the net and despite Karius’ desperate pleas to the referee, the goal stood.
But Karius’ evening went from bad to worse.
While Sadio Mane put Liverpool back on level terms after Benzema’s opener, substitute Gareth Bale came on and restored Real’s lead with a stunning bicycle kick.
Karius later allowed another thundering shot from Bale to slip through his fingers for Real’s third goal.
And as Karius was leaving the pitch distraught after the defeat, Anfield icon Carragher was filmed making his way over to the keeper before he went down the tunnel.
Carragher hugged Karius in an amazing gesture and show of support.
Karius has since tweeted that he is “infinitely sorry” for his mistakes in the defeat.
“I know I messed it up with the two mistakes and let you all down,” said a message from Karius on social media.
“Haven’t really slept until now,” he wrote the day after the match. “The scenes are still running through my head again and again.
“I’m infinitely sorry to my team-mates, for you fans, and for all the staff.
“I’d just like to turn back the time but that’s not possible. It’s even worse as we all felt that we could have beaten Real Madrid and we were in the game for a long time.
“Thank you to our unbelievable fans who came to Kiev and held my back, even after the game.
“I don’t take that for granted and once again it showed me what a big family we are. Thank you and we will come back stronger.”
