June has been the most interesting month of this year. Big films, big stars and in the midst of all that, a film led only by the females became the talk-of-the-town. The kind of movies that got consumed, appreciated and spoken about, can easily make this month one of the best ones this year. Veere Di Weddingâs success shut down every naysayer that thought films with women in the lead doesnât perform at the box office. It was not even a niche social issue-driven film but an out-and-out entertainer. Salman Khanâs favourite festival arrived with Race 3 but it couldnât do the business of any of its earlier releases. As for Ranbirâs Sanju, it might just become his biggest hit so far, because the start of the film has been really good. Hereâs a quick recap of what drowned and what sailed through this monthâŠ
Ah, it gives us immense pride to say that four women managed to rock the nation and how! From watching them abuse to Swara Bhaskerâs masturbation scene, everything was scandalous but it still worked and VDW managed to become a hit! The film didnât have a bankable male star as the lead and yet it has already earned Rs 80.23 crore. VDW was Kareena Kapoor Khanâs first release after Taimurâs birth, Sonam Kapoorâs first release after marriage and yet the film is a hit. One film has broken so many myths that it is incredible.
Next up was Salman Khanâs Race 3, which was an usual Eid bonanza from the star. Last year, Tubelight couldnât live up to expectations. This time his fanbase made it earn Rs 100 crore and more in the first three days but the film couldnât sustain. The reason behind it were the negative reviews and an equally negative word-of-mouth. Even Tubelight didnât suffer such outright rejection. Post the first three days, the film kept on faltering at the box office. But itâs a Salman film, so it is the second highest grosser presently.
Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom came, conquered and ended up being one of the hits of this year. Hollywood has found out a way to make it count at Indian box office and thatâs paying them heavily.
Sanju released on June 29 and has made heads turn with its occupancy. An occupancy of more than 60-70 percent is enough to put it on a glorious path. In the coming days, the film is going to earn more money and might just leave Race 3 behind.
Bhavesh Joshi Superhero is the sole entrant in this category. The vigilante film evoked no response at the box office. Now we can only mull over what went wrong with the film.
We will begin with the four women, which made the whole nation take offence. It was a tad liberating to see Kareena, Sonam, Swara and Shikha impersonate a batch of girls, who like to talk the way they do and take on the world the way they do. Trust us, such women do exist. VDW ended up becoming a revolution which will be talked about for generations. (Also read:Â Veere Di Wedding, Race 3: 5 films which scored low on IMDb but turned out to be box office winners)
Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal made heads turn with their portrayals on the big screen with Sanju. Ranbir managed to convince everyone all over again that he is one of the best actors of Bollywood with his performance while Vicky reiterated the fact that he is an actor par excellence. He just needs scripts that do justice to him. And then, of course, thereâs Paresh Rawal being his usual great self.
Word-of-mouth can definitely kill a film like it did with Jab Harry Met Sejal and this month, it was Race 3âs turn to bear the burnt. The absurd plot and twists made it the butt of all jokes. But the best learning of this month is, women can shoulder a commercial entertainer and carry it to victory as well. Hope this serves as an eyeopener.
July will be all about Dhadak, the Hindi remake of Marathi original, Sairaat. Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatterâs chemistry has already become the talk-of-the-town. Once it releases on July 20, the audience will get to watch one of the cutest love stories ever or at least, so we hope.
