Baahubali 2 will release a day before Dangal had released in China last year but will it replicate its success?

Call it coincidence or pure fate, Baahubali 2 will release in China exactly a day before Dangal’s release in the country. Baahubali 2 is set to release on May 4 while Aamir Khan’s film had hit the theatres in China on May 5, 2017. The film had opened with 7000 screens, which was the highest then. Later Salman Khan‘s Bajrangi Bhaijaan went past that number by releasing in 8000 screens. That made us wonder if Baahubali 2 will see similar frenzy like Dangal in China.

It was unbelievable what Dangal did to the box office of the Asian country. It not only took the top spot within days, it continued to mint money incessantly. Even Hollywood films, which were seen as a major draw in China, fell short of pulling it down from the top spot. Such was Dangal’s effect on people, that the movie got an extension after the regular 31 days were over. That had never happened with an Indian film there. Earning Rs 1200 crore from a single market is a massive feat for any film. It had earned only Rs 380 crore or more in India but went ballistic in the Chinese market. Such was its craze that people there also shot a tribute video for Aamir. They danced to the Dhaakad hai song from Dangal to tell him how much they have loved the film. The actor is the most popular foreign actor in the country, which made Secret Superstar a blockbuster there too. They just want to watch more of Aamir’s film…even if he is there only in a cameo appearance. For Baahubali 2, things will be a bit tough because China invests heavily on their own period dramas. Even their TV shows have better visual effects than our movies. So the film’s emotional connect will be the only way to grab their attention. But Baahubali 2 has a way of working its charm on people, like it did in India. Let’s hope it manages to cast a spell on the Chinese audience as well, bowling them over.
