Was Anne Hathaway really upset over Matthew McConaugheyâs body odor as they filmed their new movie? The actor infamously doesnât wear deodorant, which was supposedly a problem on the set of Serenity. Gossip Cop looked into this rumor, and we can now reveal what we know.
âAnne: On B.O. Patrol,â reads a headline in the latest edition of OK!. According to the tabloid, when Hathaway and McConaughey shot âsexy scenesâ for their upcoming thriller, she âinsisted on protectionâ from his âmanly odor.â A so-called âinsiderâ is quoted as saying, âShe basically said, âMatthew, I love you, but you stink.’â
Continues the magazineâs alleged tipster, âShe convinced him to wash up before they filmed.â The specious source also claims McConaughey had the crew âburn incense on set,â in order to cover up his supposedly unpleasant scent. But filming for Serenity took place nearly a year ago. If there was such an issue during the production, why is it only emerging now? Thatâs not the only reason to be suspicious of this tale.
Nowhere in the article does the publication mention that Hathaway and McConaughey previously worked together without incident on 2014âs Interstellar. In fact, at one of the premieres for that project, Hathaway discussed how âhonoredâ she was to share scenes with him. Around the same time, Hathaway told an amusing story about hanging out with McConaughey at his house as he was honored by American Cinematheque. She made no mention, however, of being bothered by his smell. On the contrary, she recalled their first on-set meeting, saying, âYou seem so cool and you seem so sincere and I walk away and I think, âWow, that guyâs just amazing.’â
But if McConaugheyâs odor was so problematic, why would Hathaway have signed up to work with him again? Hereâs what appears to be really going on: When People named McConaughey its âSexiest Man Aliveâ back in 2005, he confessed to the outlet, âI havenât worn deodorant in 20 years.â Then in 2008, McConaughey shared in a Playboy interview how Kate Hudson once begged him to wear deodorant while filming. He explained, however, that he takes multiple showers a day to make sure heâs always fresh.
Tellingly, OK! mentions part of that anecdote in its article, but leaves out the part about McConaugheyâs regular showers. So it seems that because he has a known history of not wearing deodorant and because the trailer for Serenity was just released two weeks ago, the tabloid saw fit to manufacture a narrative about Hathaway struggling with McConaugheyâs B.O. on set and demanding he âwash up.â Thatâs despite filming taking place nearly a year ago, despite McConaughey saying a decade ago that he showers multiple times a day, and despite Hathaway having no problem working with him before.
To say this tale reeks of dishonesty would be a bit of an understatement. Gossip Cop also spoke with Hathawayâs rep, who maintains the story is âcompletely made up.â It should be noted this same magazine falsely accused Hathaway of causing problems with the production of Barbie.
