While the Met Gala may seem like an enviably glamorous affair, where the only thing more fascinating than the elaborate gowns is the ever-intriguing A-list guest list, a new report has surfaced claiming that perhaps the event isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
According to Page Six, within Hollywood the event is seen as the “Mean Girls of Galas,” and many celebrities actually dread attending.
“The overall ambience isn’t super friendly,” one gala regular told the publication. “If you walk into the girls bathroom, all the celebrities are hanging out together, smoking together and ignoring everyone else,” they continued.
A celebrity handler also told Page Six that some of their clients have chosen to forgo the event this year. “They want to take a year or two off. It’s the same thing. It’s long, drawn out and boring.”
A Hollywood publicist echoed the same sentiments, “It’s a very tedious night. It’s very much work for them. It’s very structured, there’s a lot of pressure to network, and [it’s] not that much of an enjoyable evening.”
While these nameless quotes could easily be dismissed as silly gossip, numerous celebrities have also spoken out to criticise the night. Amy Schumer once referred to attending the gala as punishment, while Tina Fey famously called the event a “jerk parade.”
Gwyneth Paltrow also denounced the event in a 2013 interview with USA Today. Paltrow said, “it was so un-fun,” and explained that she “did not enjoy it at all.”
Though, despite vowing to never return, Paltrow did attend the 2017 gala, and looked (relatively) happy to be there.
